Explore Some of Our
Hands-On Opportunities:
Curious About Getting Involved, But Not Sure Where to Start?
Whether you’re a seasoned media pro or just starting to explore how local TV works, WHCA offers production experience opportunities for people of all backgrounds. Some participants help film community events, others assist behind the scenes, and some just want to lend a hand wherever they’re needed.
Not sure what suits you best? That’s totally fine, we have plenty of flexible ways to get involved:
Freestyle Volunteering
“Freestyle Volunteers” can mix and match among the pathways and opportunities below without committing to a more “Structured Track” like WHCA’s Production Crew Experience (further below).
Drop in when you’re available. Crew Call volunteers help film town meetings, community events, or sports. It’s a flexible way to gain hands-on experience while making a direct contribution. No long-term commitment required.
Take a concept from our One-Off Series Program catalog and make a single episode, or a handful – whatever feels right for you. No long-term commitment needed. This is a great way to try producing a program without the pressure of sustaining a full series.
Develop and produce your own ongoing show. Series producers commit to recurring episodes, usually monthly or quarterly, and work closely with WHCA staff to schedule, record, and promote their program.

Production Crew Experience (PCE)
Think of WHCA’s Production Crew Experience (PCE) as an internship — but without requiring school affiliation or academic credit. It’s a 12-week program designed to give participants guided, hands-on experience across multiple areas of community media: operating equipment, covering live events, editing programs, and supporting WHCA’s mission of local communication.
Participants enter the program through one of three roles:
-
Production Crew Intern (PCI) – For students seeking academic credit or fulfilling a school requirement.
-
Production Crew Member (PCM) – For those joining independently to build skills and gain experience, without needing school credit.
-
Production Crew Apprentice (PCA) – A limited number of participants may apply for promotion to this paid role, but only after completing at least 4 weeks of the PCE and standing out through performance, professionalism, and reliability.

Volunteer Leadership
Some volunteers choose to deepen their involvement by serving in leadership roles. WHCA encourages dedicated individuals to step into advisory, ambassador, or committee opportunities that help shape the future of local community media. Leadership positions are typically filled by those who’ve already shown strong commitment to WHCA and understand our mission, but we welcome interest from anyone passionate about advancing community access.
